JERUSALEM, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military Spokesperson's Unit said on Tuesday it had opened accounts in Farsi on Twitter and Instagram in order to address directly to Iranian people.
An official statement released by the Spokesperson's Unit said that the pages were launched on the leading platforms in Iran: Twitter, Instagram, and Telegram, under the name "Israel Defense Forces."
"For the first time, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) is launching official social media platforms for the Iranian public," the statement read.
The first posts were posted six days ago but the decision to set up the platforms was made in recent months, according to the Spokesperson's Unit.
On Tuesday, the platforms posted the command and control chart of the Quds Force, the Iranian military's arm for extraterritorial and clandestine operations. The chart maintains the Iranian force partially acts as a "terror squad."
Israel accuses the commander of the Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, of masterminding a plan to perpetrate a drone attack from Syria, which Israel said it had thwarted with an airstrike on Saturday.
The move comes amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and its ally, the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, triggered by a string of attacks, reportedly carried out by Israel, in Syria and Lebanon.
Farsi is the sixth language in which the Israeli army operates social media accounts after Hebrew, English, Arabic, French, Spanish. Altogether, IDF's accounts have millions of followers around the globe.
According to the Spokesperson's Unit, these accounts "serve as important public relations tools for multiple target audiences."
The Spokesperson's Unit includes hundreds of soldiers.
It frequently addresses the Palestinians and Israel's Arab-speaking nations, with the majority of which the Jewish state does not have official ties, by issuing press releases and information in Arabic about the army's operations and clashes with the Palestinians.
