Iraqi FM says AL chief to visit Baghdad Tuesday

BAGHDAD, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim Monday said that the Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit will pay a visit to Baghdad on Tuesday.

In a tweet on his Twitter account, al-Hakim said "we will receive the AL secretary-general in Baghdad tomorrow and will hold talks in the Foreign Ministry."

Al-Hakim said that the talks would tackle the ministerial meeting for Arab foreign ministers, which will be headed by Iraq next week at the headquarters of the AL in Cairo.

The meeting will discuss the developments in the Arab world, means to reduce tensions in the Gulf area, and the latest attacks on some regional countries, he added.

Meanwhile, the state-run al-Sabah newspaper reported on Monday that Aboul-Gheit will visit Baghdad on Tuesday at the invitation from al-Hakim and will be accompanied by Assistant Secretary General of the AL Hossam Zaki.

During his visit, Aboul-Gheit will hold meetings with the Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and the parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi to discuss a number of issues, especially that Iraq will chair the Arab Ministerial Council for the next period.

Aboul-Gheit will also discuss with the Iraqi officials the outstanding Arab issues, which is scheduled to be discussed in the Arab Ministerial Council on September 10, and forefront of which the Palestinian issue and the economic and social files, the newspaper said.

The visit comes amid tensions in the Middle East region between the United States and Iran, and the explosions of arms depots of the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi bases in Iraq, as well as the recent bombardments on positions in Syria and Lebanon.
