DAMASCUS, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- As many as 8,000 people will leave the rebel-held Rukban camp in southern Syria in three batches, the pro-government al-Watan newspaper said Tuesday.

The evacuation of these people will lead to dismantling the camp, which is located in the al-Tanf area in southeastern Syria near the Syrian-Jordanian border.

While the newspaper didn't say when the camp will be completely empty of displaced people, it said it's going to happen "soon."

The Rukban camp is home to 50,000 displaced Syrians, who are suffering from the harsh humanitarian situation.

Several batches have left the camp since April and reached government areas in the central province of Homs.

Due to its location in the al-Tanf area, the camp is close to a U.S. military base in that area.

The Syrian government has repeatedly accused the U.S. forces in al-Tanf of preventing aid convoys from reaching the Rukban camp.
