RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government on Thursday offered condolences to the Bahamas, which has suffered about 30 deaths caused by Hurricane Dorian.
"The Brazilian government expresses their deep regret to the people and government of the Bahamas for the human losses and material damage in the past few days due to the passage of Hurricane Dorian, especially in the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama," Brazil's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Hurricane Dorian, which made landfall Sunday in the Bahamas as a category 5 storm, has also destroyed some 13,000 homes in the affected areas. Catastrophe modelling company Karen Clark & Company said Thursday that total insured and uninsured losses in the region amounted to 7 billion U.S. dollars.
The Brazilian government said the Embassy of Brazil in Nassau, Bahamas' capital city, is on alert for any emergency involving Brazilian citizens. The Nassau area reportedly did not suffer great losses.
In addition to the message of condolences, the Brazilian government also announced a donation of 100,000 U.S. dollars to help with the Bahamas' reconstruction efforts.
