NAIROBI, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- London Marathon champion Brigid Kosgei said Monday she is preparing well ahead of Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13.

Kosgei, 26, has thrown down the gauntlet after winning the Great North Run in Newcastle, England in a time of 64:28, ahead of teammates Magdalyne Masai (67:36), Linet Masai (67:44) and Mary Keitany (67:58).

Kosgei has since fired the warning sign that she will be at peak form after setting a new course record in Newcastle of 64:28.

The time will not be ratified as a world record though due to the downhill elevation of the course. But it will help her get inspired as she now turns her focus to the upcoming Chicago Marathon.

"I was not expecting to run a record time in Newcastle. I just tried my best - that was all. It was great preparation for the Chicago marathon," said Kosgei on Monday.

Kosgei finished second in Chicago in 2017 and then returned last year, winning with the third-fastest time in Chicago's history in 2:18:35.

She has continued her momentum this year when she won the London Marathon in a personal best, 2:18:20, making her the seventh fastest woman in the history of marathon running.
