RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Brazil is "fully committed" to fulfilling its environmental pledges, the country's foreign ministry said on Monday.

In a statement published on the Ministry's page, the Brazilian government stressed that they "participated constructively in the preparatory process for the Climate Action Summit, which runs parallel to the 74th UN General Assembly in New York."

The Summit started on Saturday and ended early on Monday, and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro did not attend the final day's meeting, as he was on route to New York.

Bolsonaro will join in the opening of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

The ministry highlighted that Brazil's carbon emission reduction goal, as determined by the Paris Accords, is one of the most ambitious in the world, foreseeing a cut of 37 percent in greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 2025 compared with 2005.

In addition, it highlighted Brazil's participation in the coalition of Infrastructure, Cities and Local Action, one of the nine coalitions formed in the months leading up to the Summit.

"In partnership with Kenya and the UN-Habitat program, Brazil submitted a proposal for actions on improving the resilience of vulnerable urban groups. In addition, in the Energy Transition coalition, the government proposed promoting biofuels in the transportation sector, based on Brazil's own experience with the Renovabio Program," the ministry said.

"In the Nature-Based Solutions coalition, we presented a proposal based on the successful results of the Sectoral Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan for the Consolidation of a Low Carbon Economy in Agriculture," the ministry added.
