Hong Kong cultural week kicks off in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Cultural Week began Friday in Shanghai as part of the ongoing 21st China Shanghai International Arts Festival, with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra performing an opening gala concert.

Under the baton of the artistic director Yan Huichang, the concert was a real acoustic feast for Shanghai audience, bringing traditional Chinese culture and Hong Kong's innovative characteristics together.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the premiere of the violin concerto The Butterfly Lovers, the orchestra invited internationally acclaimed Chinese violinist Lyu Siqing to join the performance.

The 3-hour-long concert reached its climax when the orchestra performed as an encore the theme songs of popular 1980s Hong Kong TV series "Shang Hai Tan" and "The Legend of the Condor Heroes."

A total of seven performances and an exhibition will be held during the Hong Kong Cultural Week, which will last until Nov. 24.

Hong Kong artists will also bring to Shanghai their stage plays, ballets, operas in the coming weeks.
