5.8-magnitude earthquake hits NE Iran, no casualties

TEHRAN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake at the scale of Richter hit Sangan town in Iran's northeastern Khorasan Razavi province on Thursday morning, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.

According to the report, the epicenter of the quake was at the depth of 8 km, 34.030 north latitude and 60.325 east longitude, 300 km to the south of Iran's sacred Mash'had city.

Hossein Sanjarani, the governor of Sangan, told official IRNA news agency that teams have been dispatched to the quake-hit region to assess the possible damage.

Sanjarani also said that there has been no reports of casualties so far.

However, death of livestock, due to the earthquake, have been reported, he said.

The earthquake was felt in the Afghanistan border region and the nearby province of Khorasan Jonoubi, according to the report.
