LUSAKA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Thursday launched two strategic plans aimed at reducing malnutrition and improve nutrition in the country.

The launch of the National Food and Nutrition Strategic Plan and the National Community Health Strategy will go a long way in providing guidance and direction in improving health and nutrition.

Kennedy Malama, Director of Technical Services in the Ministry of Health, said during the launch that the government was opening a new chapter in the health sector through the launch of the two documents.

"It is expected that these documents we are launching today will provide the much-needed strategic direction and guidance as we address the key determinants of food and nutrition," he said.

He said investing in good health and nutrition was critical in ensuring universal health access for all in the country.

Noala Skinner, UNICEF Representative in Zambia, commended the government over its commitment to improve the nutrition levels as evidenced in the introduction of various government programs.

She said there was need to work towards eliminating malnutrition and that UNICEF was committed to work with the Zambian government to improve nutrition levels in Zambia.

According to her, malnutrition was still a problem in Zambia and that it was time to accelerate efforts to fight it.
