LUSAKA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Tuesday.
--The Zambian government has urged the defense forces in the country to stamp out any form of corruption that some officers could be involved in so as to help the country's fight against the vice.
Minister of Defense Davis Chama said the defense forces were not exempted from the fight against corruption and should therefore do everything to eliminate it from their institutions. (Times of Zambia)
--Zambian President Edgar Lungu said the country's national anthem should be held in high esteem because it promotes values for hard work, love and respect for one another in a unitary state.
The Zambian leader said the national anthem should be held with honor because it unifies the people and urged teachers to inculcate singing of the national anthem in pupils and explain to them the value of the song. (Zambia Daily Mail)
--Zambia's leading opposition leader has urged the government to declare a cholera outbreak in Lusaka, the country's capital, as an emergency.
United Party for National Development (UPND) Chairman for Health Christopher Kalila said the cholera outbreak should be declared a national emergency now that the military had been called in to assist. (The Mast)
--Zambia's soccer governing body has expressed shock over media reports that it was stopping local players from joining foreign clubs before the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament which kickoffs on January 13 is over.
Football Association of Zambia general secretary Ponga Liwewe said the association has not stopped any player from signing for a foreign club. (Daily Nation)
