NAIROBI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police on Friday arrested 10 foreigners over alleged human trafficking in the coastal city of Mombasa.
Transnational Organized Crime Unit detectives attached to Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested the women at a popular club situated within Nyali area of Mombasa.
Mombasa police chief Johnston Ipara said seven Nepalese and three women of Indian origin were among the detained.
"We acted on intelligence and arrested the foreigners whom we suspect are part of international human trafficking cartels. They are being interrogated by different agencies," said Ipara.
A team of anti-terrorism police officers have also questioned the women over links to terror activities in the east African nation, he said.
Court documents indicate that police were on Friday granted 10 days to keep the foreigners in custody.
However, their lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, said the foreigners were illegally detained after officers investigating the case were "compromised by rival businessmen believed to be well connected with security agents."
