LJUBLJANA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Some 6,200 people in Slovenia have joined the class action lawsuit against Volkswagen (VW) over the Dieselgate scandal, as the Slovenian Consumer Association, which announced it would join the Europe-wide lawsuit against the German car maker in September, will now check the applicants' claims.

"Lawyers will check the applications over the coming weeks. The applicants will then get emails to amend their applications if necessary," the consumer association was quoted by the Slovenian Press Agency STA on Monday after the deadline for applications expired.

The Slovenian watchdog initiated the action as part of an EU-wide effort launched by the European Consumer Association (BEUC) in cooperation with the German branch of Hausfeld, and a U.S.-based law firm, the STA continued.

According to the association's data, around 45,000 people in Slovenia have been affected by Dieselgate, which involved around 11 million diesel cars around the world.

Volkswagen was reportedly tweaked diesel engines to manipulate emissions during regulatory testing, said the STA report.
