Libyan edge to semifinals of African Nations Championship

RABAT, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Libya beat Congo Brazzaville after penalty shootout on Sunday in the Moroccan city of Agadir to secure their place in the semifinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

2014-title holders Libya took an early lead in the 15th minute through Salah Saeid. But the Congolese returned in the result at the 37th minute thanks to Junior Makiesse.

After the draw, the Libyans earned a ticket to the semifinals after a penalty shootout, 5-3.

Libya will face hosts Morocco on Wednesday in the semifinals of this tournament, which is reserved for African players based in their domestic leagues.

Morocco beat Namibia 2-0 to advance to the last four on Saturday.

In the other semifinal game, Nigeria will face Sudan on Wednesday.

Earlier on Sunday, Nigeria advanced to semis after beating Angola 2-1 in overtime. The winning goal was scored by substitute Okechukwu Gabriel at 109th minute.

For their part, the Sudanese advanced to the semifinals after defeating Zambia 1-0 on Saturday.
