Asian Games committee to ensure smooth transportation of athletes

JAKARTA, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Committee of the Asian Games INASGOC says it will take measures to accelerate the movement of athletes from dormitories to sport venues during the regional sporting event.

Director of Transport of INASGOC Ipung Purnomo said on Monday that the committee would welcome thousands of policemen and personnel from the transport ministry to manage traffic in order to accelerate the movement of the athletes.

Transport facilities such as toll roads, bus way and highways could be used for transporting the athletes, Purnomo said.

"Shoulders of roads could also be solution for passing through traffic jams quickly," he told a press conference.

The official revealed at least a total of 1,500 policemen and personnel of transport ministry would take part in speeding up transport of the athleles.

"We will manage the traffic so that the athletes can arrive on time at sport venues. A total of 1,500 personnel will undertake traffic management," he said.

Indonesia's capital of Jakarta witnesses traffic jams in several parts of the city during rush hour. Jakarta is surrounded by four satellite cities.

Over 11,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries and region will come into Jakarta and Palembang city, the provincial capital of South Sumatra from August 18 to September 2 of this year to take part in events across 40 sports during the Asian Games.
