JERUSALEM, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The German carmaker Volkswagen opened an innovation center in Tel Aviv, a coastal city and economic hub of Israel, the Israeli business media Globes reported Tuesday.

The center aims to promote the development of autonomous vehicles, new mobility services and tailor-made solutions, according to the report.

The VW Group Campus in Tel Aviv will be a co-working space called Konnect.

"Konnect is another step in expanding our activities in Israel and will help our portfolio of brands engage with the Israeli start-up ecosystem," the report quoted Volkswagen Group chief customer officer Peter Harris as saying.

Volkswagen Group chief digital officer Johann Jungwirth said the Volkswagen Group Campus Tel Aviv would provide complementary innovative solutions in various fields, including sensors, simulation, connectivity, smart navigation, cyber security, e-mobility and big data.

The report also said that as part of its activities in Israel, Konnect and Volkswagen are supporting 41 Israeli startups with innovative business ideas connected to the future of mobility.
