JERUSALEM, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A new study reveals that 85 percent of lung cancer cases in Israel could have been prevented had it not been for smoking, as published Monday by the state's Ministry of Health and the Israel Cancer Association.

The study shows that avoiding smoking could have prevented 2,104 lung cancer cases out of 2,482 new cases diagnosed in Israel in 2015.

Smoking is also responsible for 46 percent of bladder cancers in Israel, 18 percent for stomach cancer, 16 percent for renal cancer and 13 percent of pancreatic cancer.

Overall, it was possible to prevent morbidity from 3,578 Israelis each year by avoiding smoking.
