1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares slump Tuesday, dragged down by liquor sector

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares fell across the board Tuesday with liquor makers leading the decline.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 2.26 percent to end at 2,594.83 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.24 percent lower at 7,574.99 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 357.6 billion yuan (about 51.57 billion U.S. dollars), down from 422 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most shares took a dive, with losers outnumbering gainers 1,148 to 248 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,609 to 390 on the Shenzhen bourse.

Liquor makers dropped the most on Tuesday, with the sub-index down 6.84 percent. Jiangsu Yanghe Brewery Joint-Stock lost 9.61 percent to close at 109.9 yuan per share while Sichuan Swellfun saw a 9.05-percent drop to end at 30.15 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.74 percent to close at 1,292.06 points.
