PARIS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Montpellier moved up to second position in Ligue 1 after defeating Marseille 3-0 at home, while a 5-0 loss at Nantes consigned Guingamp to the bottom of the table on Sunday.
It took Montpellier less than 20 minutes in the second half to build a commanding three-goal advantage, with two goals from Gaetan Laborde and one from Paul Lasne.
Laborde was left unmarked to finish a close-range header in the 51st minute, leaving Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda stranded on the goal line.
Laborde continued his fine form in the 62nd minute, when he intercepted Jordan Amavi's ball and cut in for a superb shot into the far corner after his right-flank cross was cleared by a Marseille defender.
The hosts were assured of their win in the 70th minute, as Lasne collected Florent Mollet's pass on the edge of the area before slotting it home.
With 25 points from 12 matches, Montpellier have overtaken Lille, who lost to runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 on Friday, into second place on goal difference. Both sides are 11 points behind PSG, who maintained their perfect winning start to the campaign.
Guingamp failed to capitalize on Monaco's loss on Saturday and remain bottom of the table after a 5-0 mauling at Nantes. Emiliano Sala scored twice to improve his tally to ten for the season, with Valentin Rongier, Abdoulaye Toure and Andrei Girotto also getting among the goals.
This was Nantes' third straight victory, with new manager Vahid Halilhodzic having overseen the team climb from 19th place to mid-table in his first month in charge.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Saint-Etienne triumphed in a thrilling 4-3 win over Angers.
