BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.88 percent, at 2,504.82 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.81 percent lower at 7,332.35 points.
The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 275.91 billion yuan (about 40 billion U.S. dollars), up from 213.3 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.
Nearly 2,700 listed companies slumped, ranging from coal miners and steel mills to companies in environmental protection sector.
Bucking the trend, stocks related to 5G technology continued to rally, as a major bright spot in a bearish market. Telecom carrier China Unicom rose 0.97 percent to 5.23 yuan, extending the rebound on Monday.
China's NASDAQ-style ChiNext Index lost 0.85 percent to close at 1,273.45 points.
