Macao's cross-border vehicle traffic rises to 4.9 mln trips in 2018

MACAO, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Macao's cross-border vehicular traffic rose by 2.3 percent to 4,927,368 trips in 2018, while gross weight of containerized cargo by land increased by 15.5 percent to 16,043 tonnes, the special administrative region's statistic service said here on Friday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that those passing through the checkpoint of Cotai recorded an increase of 16.5 percent, while those going through the checkpoint of Border Gate saw a decrease of 3.6 percent.

Meanwhile, vehicle trips passing through the Checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge totalled 23,574 since its opening in Oct. 2018.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, cross-border vehicle traffic grew by 4.4 percent year-on-year to 1,287,805 trips, the report added.

In 2018, gross weight of containerized cargo by land rose by 15.5 percent year-on-year to 16,043 tonnes, In the fourth quarter, gross weight of containerized cargo by land surged by 114.2 percent year-on-year to 4,934 tonnes.

The report also mentioned that the total number of licensed motor vehicles in Macao at the end of 2018 edged down by 0.6 percent year-on-year to 240,145, of which light motorcycles (26,256) decreased by 10.5 percent, whereas light automobiles (108,442) and heavy motorcycles (97,822) inched up by 0.8 percent and 0.9 percent respectively.

In 2018, the number of traffic accidents dropped by 6.5 percent year-on-year to 13,764, resulting in 4,390 casualties and 10 of them were killed.
