BAGHDAD, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi President Barham Salih on Tuesday received a senior British official in Baghdad and called for developing bilateral relations, according to a statement by the president's office.

Salih's comments came during his meeting with John Gordon Lorimer, senior adviser to the British Ministry of Defense for the Middle East.

Salih "highlighted the importance of promoting bilateral relations between the two countries at various levels in a way that serves the interests of the two peoples," said the statement.

He also praised the effective role of Britain within the international coalition in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group, it added.

For his part, Lorimer renewed Britain's support for the stability and prosperity of Iraq and expressed his country's readiness to "effectively contribute to strengthening and building the training and armament capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces."
