Business outlook turns sluggish in Taiwan

TAIPEI, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Manufacturers, service providers and builders in Taiwan all expect lukewarm business in the coming six months, according to the latest readings by the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) Friday.

In its latest business outlook survey in April, the think-tank TIER said 23.5 percent of responding manufacturers expected better business in the coming six months, sharply down 22 percentage points from the previous month, while 25.1 percent of respondents perceived a worse outlook, 13.2 percentage points higher than the previous month.

The manufacturing composite indicator for April 2019 moved down by 0.77 percentage points from March to 95.08 points. The benchmark of 100 points was set in 2006.

For the service sector, the TIER composite indicator for April weakened to 96.09 points, down 0.53 percentage points from the previous correction.

Meanwhile, the TIER construction sector composite indicator for April fell for the second consecutive month to 90.66 points, compared with 90.91 points in March.
