BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running hit musical "Cats" will hit the stage in Shanghai on June 7, marking the start of its three-month China tour.
The musical will be performed at the Shanghai Cultural Square from June 7 to 16, and later tour other Chinese cities including Wuhan, Beijing, Wuxi, Nanjing and Chengdu.
Adapted from TS Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," the musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Directed by Trevor Nunn, Cats first opened in the West End, London, in 1981, and then to Broadway in 1982. It won numerous awards, including Best Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards.
