BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- German auto brand BMW is recalling 403 vehicles in the Chinese market due to defective cable connectors, according to China's market regulator.

The recall, which started Friday, involves imported M3 models produced between July 28, 2007 and Oct. 30, 2009, according to a statement by the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Due to faulty design, the cable connectors in the front fuse box may wear over time and lead to poor contact, which may make it unable to start the vehicle or lead to the malfunction of the electronic module.

In the latter case, it would become hard to control the vehicle, posing a safety hazard, the authority said.

The recall was an expansion of previous recall announced on April 8 over similar problems involving 121,381 vehicles.

BMW China Automotive Trading Ltd. will replace the defective parts for affected owners free of charge.
