BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- A recent survey by China Youth Daily showed that 77.7 percent of Chinese consumers support hotels in stopping supplies of single-use everyday items ranging from toothbrushes to plastic disposable razors.

Of the 2,002 surveyed, 54.7 percent of the respondents believe the move will reduce waste.

The survey was conducted in response to regulations on garbage sorting that went into effect on July 1 in Shanghai, requiring hotels in the city to stop offering disposable toiletry kits unless customers ask.

Hotel guests are encouraged to use and reuse recyclable daily consumables during their stay.

Yang Yi, a civil servant from east China's Jiangsu Province, said single-use item cuts in hotels can not only help conserve resources, and also allow hotels to pay more attention to enhancing other services.

"However, it might bring inconvenience to some travelers on an impromptu business trip," Yang said.

According to the survey, 64.4 percent of the respondents believe that hotels can make up for such inconvenience by lowering room rates or offering free breakfast.

Since many people are accustomed to hotels offering disposable consumables, the policy needs to be popularized as soon as possible, Yang said.
