PARIS, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to Rennes in Ligue 1's second matchday on Sunday.

It was the third encounter between the two sides in less than four months. PSG lost the French Cup final to Rennes last season, before avenging that defeat by emerging victorious in the French Super Cup a fortnight ago.

Edinson Cavani headed against the post in the 14th minute, but broke the deadlock 20 minutes later following a mistake from Rennes captain Damien Da Silva, who misplaced a pass back to goalkeeper Romain Salin, allowing the Uruguayan striker to fire home from close range.

Cavani's offensive partner Kylian Mbappe came close to doubling the visitors' lead, but could only hit the side netting after speeding past a defender three minutes later.

Undaunted, Rennes rallied and found an equalizer just before the break, as M'Baye Niang collected Hamari Traore's delivery from the right flank before turning around to slot a low shot past PSG keeper Alphonse Areola.

16-year-old Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga shone early in the second half, as his precise cross found an unmarked Romain Del Castillo, who rose highest to head the winner past Areola in the 48th minute.

Jeremy Gelin almost made it 3-1 but hit the post shortly after the hour mark, while at the other end, Mbappe saw his attempt parried by Salin with less than ten minutes remaining.

PSG's defeat means their new season stands in stark contrast to last campaign, when they won the first 14 league matches and remained unbeaten until February.

Rennes, on the other hand, now have two wins from two games, just like Lyon and Nice.

Elsewhere, Denis Bouanga's late volley allowed Saint-Etienne a share of the points after a 1-1 draw at home to Brest, and the match between Reims and Strasbourg ended goalless.
