RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Athletico Paranaense secured their first Copa do Brasil on Wednesday by completing a 3-1 aggregate victory over Internacional.
A 2-1 win at Internacional's Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre guaranteed the title for Athletico after their 1-0 victory in the first leg in Curitiba.
Leo Cittadini gave Athletico a 2-0 overall lead with a 24th minute strike following a counter-attack before Nicolas Lopez equalized just after the half-hour mark.
The visitors were content to sit back and defend for long periods of the second half as Internacional probed in search of an equalizer. But Athletico forward Rony da Silva put the result beyond doubt by firing in from close range in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
The result earns Athletico an automatic berth in next year's Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club competition.
The club's previous best result in the Copa do Brasil was a runner-up finish in 2013.
