‘Arsene Wenger will quit if Arsenal do not win a trophy this year'– Hughes
MARK HUGHES reckons Arsene Wenger will quit Arsenal if they do not win a trophy this season.
After investing a club record £42.5million in German playmaker Mesut Ozil this summer, the stakes have never been higher for Wenger, according to Stoke manager Hughes.
Wenger took over as Gunners boss in 1994 but has gone eight years without winning silverware and his contract is up for renewal next year.
Ahead of today’s trip to the Emirates, Hughes said: “If he didn’t win something this season Arsene might think it’s time to go.
“He has taken Arsenal through massive periods in the club’s history — changing grounds and building different teams — so I can understand his reluctance to walk out.
“With Alex Ferguson gone, he is the last Premier League manager to have any kind of longevity.
“It won’t happen again, there is no patience any more.”
Hughes also suggested Wenger may go — even if Arsenal do land a trophy.
He added: “He will have his thoughts about success and what might be success in his eyes might be different from other people.”
