ASSADABAD, Afghanistan, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least three people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured as clash flared up between security forces and militants loyal to the Islamic State (IS) group in Chawkay district of the eastern Kunar province in Afghanistan on Sunday, a local official said.

The clash, according to the official who declined to be identified, erupted at 06:00 a.m. local time on Sunday when a group of IS insurgents attacked some security checkpoints in Chawkay district triggering gun battle which has been continuing.

According to the official, over a dozen people have been killed and injured in the ongoing fighting.

Meantime, Azizullah the director of health department in provincial capital Assadabad said that three dead bodies and nine injured persons including police and army personnel had been taken to hospital in Assadabad city.

IS militants who have intensified activities have yet to make comment.
