BERLIN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund have appointed Lucien Favre as their new head coach for the upcoming season, the Bundesliga club announced in an official statement on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old Swiss returns to the Bundesliga after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal that runs until the summer of 2020, to replace Peter Stoeger as Dortmund coach on June 30.

"The signing of Lucien Favre as our coach is an important part of our sporting restart this summer. He is highly valued by us for his qualities, which he has impressively proved several time in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin and Monchengladbach or most recently with Nice," Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc told the club's homepage.

Favre knows the Bundesliga business very well, as he spent two years with Hertha Berlin (2007-2009) and four years with Borussia Monchengladbach (2011-2015). He led Monchengladbach into the Europa League and Champions League.

"To coach Borussia Dortmund is an appealing challenge which I would like to meet. I would like to thank those responsible for their trust in me. Now we will work together on the new team. Dortmund is one of the most interesting clubs in Europe and I am now looking forward to return to the Bundesliga," Favre said.

Favre is considered a meticulous coach, who stands for attacking-minded football and whose great strengths are his skillful tactics and his ability to develop young players.

The former Switzerland international was two years in charge at French top-flight outfit Nice lately. His new club Borussia Dortmund completed the Bundesliga season 2017-2018 in fourth place, booking their berth for next season's UEFA Champions League group stage.
