BEIRUT, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese lawmaker Sethrida Geagea on Tuesday called upon Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri to compensate farmers in Bcharre in north Lebanon for losses of apple crop due to high humidity, local media reported.

"We wish Hariri to ask the Higher Relief Commission to send experts to check the apple orchards in Bcharre in a bid to compensate farmers to cover the living costs," Elnashra, an online independent newspaper, quoted Geagea as saying.

Geagea said that farmers are no more capable of selling their apples.

"We urge the prime minister to speed up the government's support for farmers in the midst of the current difficult economic and social situation in Lebanon," she said.

A large number of Lebanese farmers make their livings by cultivating apples.

Lebanese farmers have, on many occasions, appealed to the authorities to support the agricultural sector by adopting different measures.
