BEIRUT, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Joseph Votel, the commander of U.S. Central Command, said Tuesday that the United States will continue its support for the Lebanese army, Lebanon's presidential website reported.
"The United States will continue to support Lebanon, noting that the Lebanese army has succeeded in strengthening its capabilities," Votel was quoted as saying during his meeting at Baabda Palace with President Michel Aoun.
Aoun praised Votel for his role in boosting cooperation between the U.S. and Lebanese armies which enabled Lebanon to defeat terrorism.
The United States is the biggest provider of military aid to Lebanon, as the Lebanese army has received a total of 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in military aid from the United States since the 2006 war with Israel.
