"Bumblebee" retains top position at Chinese box office

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Paramount's science fiction and action film "Bumblebee" continued to lead the Chinese mainland box office for the third straight week.

Released in the mainland on Jan. 4 and starring John Cena, the "Transformers" prequel grossed 203.26 million yuan (about 29.86 million U.S. dollars) last week, taking its total box office sales to over 939 million yuan.

Chinese action film, "The Big Shot," stayed in the second position, having almost doubled its total sales with 138.54 million yuan earned in the past week.

The third place belonged to Chinese fantasy animation "White Snake," which raked in 120.32 million yuan amid growing positive feedback from viewers.

Newly-released thriller "Escape Room" came in the fourth with 57-million-yuan in ticket sales in just three days.

Domestic comedy "Kill Mobile" rounded out the top five, earning 29.42 million yuan in the past week, despite being released on Dec. 28 last year.

Moreover, the mainland ticket sales of DC Comics blockbuster "Aquaman" hit 2 billion yuan by Tuesday, as the film marked its 47th day on Chinese screens, according to China Film News.
