ADEN, Yemen, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12 people were wounded Tuesday when mortar rounds launched by the Houthi rebels targeted a residential area in Yemen's southwestern province of Taiz, a security official told Xinhua.

Fighters of the Houthi group fired a number of mortar shells on a residential neighborhood in Taiz province, leaving 12 people wounded, including three women and two children, the local security source said on condition of anonymity.

He said the mortar shells targeted a government-controlled residential area near the city's Public Square, causing casualties amongst the passers-by and property damage.

One of the Houthi-fired mortar shells landed on a parked car, causing an explosion in the area, the source said.

A local medic confirmed to Xinhua that the wounded civilians were all transferred to a hospital in Taiz for medical treatment.

He said, on condition of anonymity, that some of the injured people who needed intensive care due to their serious injuries were moved later to other hospitals in Taiz.

The number of civilian deaths and injuries, especially children, continues to increase daily in the province of Taiz as a result of mortar shells fired indiscriminately by both of the warring factions.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Houthi rebels overtook the capital Sanaa and ousted the government of President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. A Saudi-led coalition has been fighting the Houthis since 2015.

The conflict has caused what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis, killing more than 10,000 people and causing 14 million Yemenis at the brink of starvation.
