JERUSALEM, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Gaza militants opened fire near the fence between the besieged Palestinian enclave and Israel on Tuesday afternoon, lightly injuring an Israeli soldier, Israeli military said.

The military said in a statement that shots were fired towards an Israeli force near the fence.

"As a result, an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldier was lightly wounded," the statement said. An ambulance evacuated him to a hospital.

Minutes after the fire, Palestinian media reported that the IDF attacked the post from which the shots were fired.

The incident came hours after Israeli artillery struck a military lookout post in the northern Gaza Strip belonging to military groups in Gaza. The post was destroyed but no injuries were reported, according to security officials in Gaza.

Meanwhile, an Israeli army spokesperson said in a statement that the shelling came after Gaza gunmen opened fire early on Tuesday morning at an Israeli army patrol close to the fence.

The spokesperson held Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist movement that runs Gaza, responsible for the attack and said that no injuries were reported.
