GAZA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Israeli war jets carried out on Tuesday night a series of airstrikes on military facilities belonging to Hamas, eyewitnesses and security sources said.

Israeli army helicopters and F-16 war planes hovered over the Gaza Strip before a series of explosions were heard in the northern areas of the coastal enclave, they said.

The security sources said four successive airstrikes were carried out against a Hamas military facility west of the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahia, adding that severe damage was caused to the facility, but no injuries were reported.

The Israeli airstrikes came hours after Gaza gunmen shot and wounded an Israeli army officer on the border between the eastern Gaza Strip and Israel, according to Israeli media.

Right after the army officer was injured, Israeli tanks fired at a Hamas lookout post east of al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing one Palestinian and wounding four others.

Earlier in the day, Gaza gunmen also opened fire at an Israeli army patrol on the border between the southeast Gaza Strip and Israel with no injuries reported.

In response, Israeli army's tanks destroyed a Hamas military lookout post close to the border.

In an earlier statement, an Israeli army spokesman held Hamas responsible for the shooting attack, saying no injuries were reported.
