Macao's broad money supply grows by 10.0 pct in May

MACAO, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Macao's broad money supply continued to grow in May with a stable share of patacas, the special administrative region's monetary watchdog said here on Thursday.

Monetary Authority of Macao said the currency in circulation fell 1.5 percent month-to-month whereas demand deposits rose 6.3 percent. M1 increased 4.8 percent from one month earlier and quasi-monetary liabilities grew 0.4 percent.

The sum of these two items, that is, broad money supply M2 rose 0.9 percent month-to-month to 671.2 billion patacas, the watchdog added.

On an annual basis, M1 and M2 increased 7.1 percent and 10.0 percent respectively. The shares of pataca, Hong Kong dollar, renminbi and U.S. dollars in M2 were 30.2 percent, 50.4 percent, 4.4 percent and 13.1 percent respectively.

Resident deposits grew 1.0 percent from the preceding month to 654.8 billion patacas while non-resident deposits also rose 0.2 percent to 251.5 billion patacas.

On the other hand, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased 2.8 percent to 248.8 billion patacas.

As a result, total deposits in the banking sector increased 1.2 percent from a month earlier to 1,155.2 billion patacas. The shares of pataca, Hong Kong dollar, renminbi and U.S. dollar in total deposits were 18.5 percent, 50.8 percent, 3.8 percent and 24.4 percent respectively. (1 U.S. dollar equals to 8.06 patacas)
